Who We Are

English In Action helps adult immigrants to improve their English skills and to become more involved in the community by building lasting relationships and friendships with English-speaking volunteers. Located in the Roaring Fork Valley of western Colorado, we started as a program of the Basalt Regional Library in 1994. In 2005, we became an independent nonprofit, with a main office in El Jebel and partnerships with the Pitkin County Library in Aspen and the Basalt Regional Library.

Our primary program is a one-on-one tutoring program, where volunteer community members meet with adult students on a weekly basis. We also offer small group tutoring and periodic workshops to support student learning.

Our mission is to build community and intercultural relationships through language development, personal empowerment and community engagement.

Your Help Is Needed!

With no advertising on our part, English In Action has a year-long waiting list of more than 100 adults who would like to be matched with a tutor. These individuals are eager to improve their English and participate more fully in our community. Your help as a volunteer or donor is needed to reach an increasing number of students!
